Prepping for Admission Interviews

With the admission season upon us, all of us worry, not just about the grades but also the personal interviews and group discussion that form a part of the admission package. The interviewers go beyond flipping through pages of grades; rather they want to find out whether or not the applicant will be a productive addition to the college environment.

While the process of interview and discussions in a group may seem like a scary prospect, there are a few ways to handle the pre-interview jitters.

Preparing for a Personal Interview (PI)

Although your admission into the college does not depend solely on your performance in the personal interview, it does help to create a favorable impression nonetheless.

Describe yourself: internet personality tests are not going to come to your rescue here. You will need to sum up your life and interests in a few sentences. But make sure those sentences are memorable enough for the interviewer.

Why this college: the answer at the tip of your tongue should not be ‘good placement opportunities.’ Rather focus on your intellectual interests and how the college will help you achieve the same.

Role model(s): this is a question that you need to answer carefully and with enough validation and clarity. Your role model can be a real life person or a fictional character. The point is to convince the interviewer about your idol’s influence on your life and how they have helped you grow.

Preparing for Group Discussions (GD)

Group Discussions are an important mechanism to ascertain whether or not the candidate possesses certain characteristics like team work, team leadership, independent thinking etc. You can always be prepared to tackle the group discussion with grace and confidence by keeping a few tips in mind.

Updated information: keep yourself well stocked about the current affairs by leafing through magazines and newspapers.  Substantiating your claims with well conducted research about the topics will also be beneficial.

Grasping the topic: once the topic for the group discussion is given, give yourself a few moments to gather your thoughts so that you can communicate your views in a clear and precise manner. Hone your communication skills a few days before the date with the help of your friends and family.

Initiate discussion: a time tested way to impress the interviewer is to take initiative to lead and participate in the discussion without hogging the conversation.

While it is always beneficial to be prepared for an interview that might come knocking on your door any moment, it is first necessary to decide the college and the career that you want to pursue.
